The United States beat the Dominican Republic today to move a step closer to retaining their International Basketball Federation Under-17 World Cup title in Argentina.

The four-time defending champions advanced to the quarter-finals with a 103-60 win at the Union Athletic Club in Santa Fe.

It sets up an encounter with Croatia, who defeated Egypt 68-55 in their round-of-16 tie.

After a tight first quarter in which they built just a 24-18 lead, the US took control of the game with a 30-13 second quarter that saw them force nine turnovers and shoot 12-of-18 from the field.

Their 23-point lead had increased to 43 by the end of the contest with the Dominican Republic unable to find a way back.

"Dominican Republic came out really aggressive," Don Showalter, the US’ head coach, said.

"Their determination and energy level was really good to start the game.

"We probably didn’t quite match that the first four or five minutes, but as the game went on, we took control and did a really nice job."
