Alpine skiing and sliding sports will both be held in Yanqing, which is around 90 kilometres from the Chinese capital.

Work is underway using "high-tech techonlogy", according to Xinhua.

Venues include the National Alpine Ski Center and National Sliding Center, as well as an Athletes' Village and press centre.

Xinhua reported that designers were aiming to build venues not only to serve the Games but to leave a "reusable treasure" afterwards.

It is predicted that the Alpine venue will be 50 per cent complete by the end of the year and ready for test events by the end of 2019.

The sliding track will be 35 per cent finished by the end of this year, organisers hope.

Li Xinggang is chief architect at the Yanqing venues and also headed the Chinese design team for the famous Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, the focal venue for the 2008 Summer Olympics which will again host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in 2022.

"The buildings will embody a design philosophy of integrating with nature while being compact, convenient, green and embellished with unique Chinese characteristics," Li said to Xinhua.

"The local residents will see great improvement to their earnings and way of life.

"I want my architecture to not only serve the Olympic Games, but also leave a legacy that can benefit the local people and future generations."

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are due to run between February 4 and 20 with the Paralympics following between March 4 and 13.

Other venue clusters are in Beijing itself and Zhangjiakou.
