China's Dong Jie and Hang Ting delighted their home fans as they reached the quarter-finals of the Beach Volleyball Under-19 World Championships in Nanjing with a 22-20, 21-19 win over Bolivia's Maria Fernanda Canedo and Nicole Alessandra Nogales.

Elsewhere, in the men’s tournament, there was drama as the Thai pairing of Phichakon Narathon and Phanupong Thanan beat Brazilian second seeds Gabriel Zuliani and Gabriel De Abreu Lima Pisco 21-19, 21-18 to also reach the last eight.

Indonesia's Bintang Akbar and Danang Herlambang also sparkled in the men's event as they eliminated home top seeds Liu Jinqiu and Tang Xingyu 21-12, 21-14 and then Switzerland's Nathan Broch and Timon Gysin 21-16, 19-21,17-15 in the round-of-16.

Brothers Javier and Joaquin Bello of England knocked out Kazakhstan's Nurdos Aldas and Abdulmajid Makhmohammad 21-15, 21-13 and then put paid to Italy's Alberto Di Silvestre and Tobia Marchetto, 21-14, 21-12.

Pairs from seven other nations advanced from the women's round-of-16 in the International Volleyball Federation event at the Tangshan International Beach Sports Park.

Canada's Erika Vermette and Dana Roskic won a tough encounter with Germany's Lea Sophie Kunst and Anna-Lena Grune, 17-21, 21-19, 15-11, while the US pairing of Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks outlasted Spain's Aina Munar and Sofia Gonzalez 25-23, 21-14.

Third-seeded Dutch duo Raisa Schoon and Emi van Driel led the contingent of European quarter-finalists with their 21-16, 21-14 win over second-seeded Brazilian pair Thamela Coradello and Anna Karolayne Figueredo.

Poland's Julia Gierczynska and Patrycja Jundzill bounced back from their opening set loss to oust top-seeded Chinese pair Cao Shuting and Zeng Jinjin 15-21, 21-13, 15-6, and Russia's Mariia Bocharova and Maria Voronina defeated Ukraine's Kateryna Dashevska and Sofia Rylova 21-13, 23-21.

Spain's Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno Matveeva and Switzerland's Mara Betschart and Celine Baumann produced respective straight-set triumphs against US pairing Maya Harvey and Megan Kraft, 21-18, 21-12, and Thailand's Pawarun Chanthawichai and Thatsarida Singchuea, 21-19, 22-20.

Narathon and Thanan's eye-catching victory on centre court meant the Thai pairing kept a perfect record of winning all their matches so far in straight sets.

Elsewhere in the men's event, Russia's Alexey Gusev and Pavel Shustrov and Argentina's Mauro Zelayeta and Bautistcva Amieva also kept their perfect run and advanced to the final eight with respective victories over Hungary's Artur Hajos and Bence Attila Streli, 21-17, 22-20, and France's Vivien Tournier and Paul Nicole, 21-16, 21-14.

Two teams that had advanced directly to the round-of-16 were Germany's Lukas Pfretzschner and Filip John and Poland's Dominik Poznanski and Mikolaj Miszczuk, who earned respective triumphs against Mozambique's Jorge Monjane and Arsenio Guvu, 21-18, 21-15, and Australia's James Takken and Mark Nicolaidis, 21-17, 16-21, 15-12.

In the other matches, Russians Denis Shekunov and Dmitrii Veretiuk won their round-of-24 match against Chileans Vicente Droguett and Gaspar Lammel, 21-14, 21-17, before halting the winning run of Germany's Rudy Schneider and Simon Pfretzschner, 21-14, 21-14.
