Dan John and Eric Stadie upset the seeding system in an all-German men's final at the World University Beach Volleyball Championship on home sand in Munich.

The 14th seeds defeated their top seeded compatriots Bennet and David Poniewaz in straight sets at the Munich Olympic Park.

They came through 21-17, 21-19 in 46 minutes to seal the gold medal.

Bronze went to Swiss third seeds Florian Breer and Yves Haussener.

They proved too strong for fourth seeded Austrians Felix Friedl and Maximilian Trummer as they came from behind to win 19-21, 21-19, 15-9.

In the women's event the final was won by Canada's twins Nicole and Megan McNamara.

The eighth seeds defeated Spanish third seeds Maria Belen Carro Marquez de Acuna and Paula Soria Gutierrez in three sets, 21-14, 18-21, 15-10.

American second seeds Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden won bronze.

They saw off ninth seeds Zoe Verge-Depre and Esmee Bobner of Switzerland, 21-19, 21-16.
