Top home team USA Red beat Puerto Rico 5-0 to maintain their perfect record on day five of the USA Softball International Cup, to earn a place in the Championship match at Irvine, California.

USA Red, comprised of players who will form the nation's roster at the World Championship in the Japanese city of Chiba next month, are sure to top Pool A and will meet the winners of the Pool B match on day six between Japan and the second-string home team USA Blue.

The latter two sides maintained their own unbeaten records on day five, with USA Blue defeating Mexico 10-2, and Japan earning an 8-0 win over Venezuela at Bill Barber Park.

In the day’s other game, Scrap Yard Fast Pitch, a Texas-based professional team, maintained their place behind USA Red in Pool A with a 15-0 win over Peru.

Monica Abbott and Kirsti Merritt were the stand-out performers for USA Red, with the latter rounding off the scoreline with a solo home run.

Women's softball will return to the Olympics at Tokyo 2020.
