Germany's Lara Lessmann topped qualification for the women's International Cycling Union (UCI) BMX Freestyle Park World Cup in Edmonton.

The competition was one of several events to begin today as part of the third stop of the Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) World Series.

Lessmann achieved a score of 82.60 points in qualification, putting the 18-year-old top of the standings in the Canadian city.

She was followed by the United States' Hannah Roberts, who was second on 80.20 points.

The qualification results reflect the duo’s battle for the overall series leadership, which is currently headed by Roberts with Lessmann in hot pursuit.

Switzerland’s Nikita Ducarroz will hope to challenge the pair in tomorrow’s final, having qualified in third place on 76.20 points.

A total of 12 cyclists booked their places in the final.

The UCI Flatland World Cup also started on the opening day, with men's qualification taking place.

France's Matthias Dandois topped the standings on 89.67 points, with Canada's Jean William Prevost second on 85.83.

Chile's Benjamin Hudson rounded off the top three by achieving 83.83 points.
