The University of Strasbourg triumphed in the team badminton competition at the European Universities Games in Coimbra.

The French university progressed through to the final of the event in the Portuguese city, where they faced the challenge of the University of Nottingham.

Lilian Yang gave the University of Nottingham the lead by beating Sashina Wigneswaran 21-11, 21-8 in the women’s singles.

Phone Pyae Naing doubled the advantage with a closely fought 23-21, 21-19 men’s singles win over Philipp Discher.

The University of Strasbourg hit back as their women’s doubles pairing of Rosy Oktavia Pancasari and Wigneswaran came from behind to beat Emily Witts and Tiara Samuel 13-21, 21-17, 21-16.

The tie was soon level as Mathieu Gangloff and Matéo Martinez won the men’s doubles 21-19, 21-16 against Sam Smith and James Youle.

It left the match resting on the mixed doubles tie, with the University of Nottingham’s Yang and Nang taking the opener

Pancasari and Thomas Baures fought back to win the remaining games 21-17, 21-16 to secure a dramatic 3-2 win.

Uludag University from Turkey and Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands rounded off the podium, having suffered semi-final defeats.

Group matches in 3x3 basketball and handball took place today, along with table tennis and volleyball.

There were also heats in rowing.

Competition is due to continue in the Portuguese riverfront city tomorrow.
