The 2018 British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships began in Nottingham today with quad singles players battling it out for quarter-final places at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

Among the highlights from today’s action included reigning national champion Richard Green’s 6-0, 6-1 win over fellow Briton Garry Cox, which will now see him play Japan’s world number five Koji Sugeno, who recovered from a set and 3-1 down to beat two-time British Open champion Lucas Sithole from South Africa, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Elsewhere in the singles, local Nottinghamshire hope James Shaw and Britain's Rio 2016 Paralympian Antony Cotterill both lost, with Shaw falling to Japan’s Shota Kawano 7-5, 7-5.

Cotterill was beaten by third seed and 2017 semi-finalist Heath Davidson from Australia, 6-1, 6-0.

World number eight Ymanitu Silva beat Dutchman Sam Schroder 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 and is now due to play Britain’s Damien Lapthorne, the second seed, tomorrow. 

America's world number seven Bryan Barten bowed out after being beaten by Canada’s Rob Shaw, the world number 11.

Shaw took the win 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

That last match of the day came in the men’s doubles, with Britain's newly crowned Wimbledon champions Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid seeing off Dutchman Maikel Scheffers and Japan’s Kouhei Suzuki 6-3, 6-2.

Tomorrow’s play is set to begin with the quad singles quarter-finals, before the women’s quarter-finals go ahead.
