Natalia Kalucka of Poland and Russian Almaz Nagaev secured individual gold medals in the women's and men's youth A speed categories on the opening day of the International Federation of Sport Climbing Youth World Championships in Moscow.

Kalucka topped the women's podium in the event for climbers between the ages of 16 and 17 after she beat Kamilla Kushaeva of Russia in the head-to-head final.

The Polish climber clocked 8.38sec to edge the Russian into the silver medal position.

The bronze medal went to Kalucka's sister Aleksandra, who defeated Russian opponent Daria Potopova in the small final thanks to her time of 8.31.

Russia bounced back from the disappointment in the women's event as Nagaev reigned supreme in the men's speed final.

Nagaev's time of 6.66 proved too quick for American Jordan Fishman, who was unable to record a time after falling during the gold medal contest.

Russia cemented their dominance of the event by also securing the bronze medal as Eduard Daukaev beat Nickolaie Riva Deneira of Estonia in the small final.

The Russian athlete's time of 7.21 saw him join Nagaev on the podium.

The Championships in the Russian capital are due to continue tomorrow.
