The success has ensured Sagan has not worn his trade team jersey since 2011, having either worn the world or national champion jersey.

This will continue next year due to his latest national success in June.

He could face competition for the European title tomorrow from Norway’s Alexander Kristoff, the defending champion and runner-up at last year’s World Championships.

Kristoff won the final stage of the Tour de France last month, his first win on the Champs-Elysees.

Germany's John Degenkolb and Belgium's Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet could also prove names to watch.

Britain will be deprived of Mark Cavendish, after the 2011 world champion was forced to pull out of the race on medical advice.

It has followed an injury disrupted season for the sprinter, who has been replaced in the British team by Mark Christian.
