World champion Peter Sagan is among the favourites to claim victory in the men's road race on the final day of the European Championships tomorrow.

The Slovakian star triumphed in the event two years ago in France and will hope to repeat the feat in Glasgow.

A sprint finish could be possible at the conclusion of the 230 kilometre event, which is a largely city-centre course.

He will need to negotiate 16 climbs of St Vincent Street before the finish at Glasgow Green.

Sagan has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years, having won the points classification at the Tour de France in six of the last seven editions, with disqualification preventing a seventh success.

He has also triumphed in the last three Road World Championships, as well as earning six national road race titles since 2011.

The success has ensured Sagan has not worn his trade team jersey since 2011, having either worn the world or national champion jersey.

This will continue next year due to his latest national success in June.

He could face competition for the European title tomorrow from Norway’s Alexander Kristoff, the defending champion and runner-up at last year’s World Championships.

Kristoff won the final stage of the Tour de France last month, his first win on the Champs-Elysees.

Germany's John Degenkolb and Belgium's Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet could also prove names to watch.

Britain will be deprived of Mark Cavendish, after the 2011 world champion was forced to pull out of the race on medical advice.

It has followed an injury disrupted season for the sprinter, who has been replaced in the British team by Mark Christian.

Scott Thwaites has been tipped as a potential option for the British team, although Ben Swift and Adam Blythe could be in their thinking.
