Russia beat Japan on penalties to secure fifth place at the Intellectual Impairments World Football Championships in Sweden today.

The Russian side had taken the lead in extra time through Andrey Alexeev after the match had finished 0-0 at the Solviksvallen in Arvika.

Japan then scored a dramatic equaliser in the last minute of the game to send the match to penalties.

Russia held their nerve in the shootout, claiming a 4-2 win to seal a fifth-place finish.

The final of the tournament, between Saudi Arabia and Argentina, is due to be held tomorrow.

Saudi Arabia will be looking to defend their title and Ahmed Bu Helal, who scored the third goal in a comprehensive 4-1 victory over France in their semi-final yesterday, said the match against Argentina representatives a different challenge for his side.

"It will be a strong match and we need to prepare for Argentina more than this game," he said.

France will play Poland in the third-place play-off.
