Former world champions Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan were dumped out in round one of the men's doubles competition as the Badminton World Federation Japan Open continued in Tokyo.

No singles matches were played on day two of the event at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza, which will be used as a venue for the 2020 Olympic Games.

China's Liu and Zhang, the fourth seeds, lost their opening clash to Japan's home pairing of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi.

The host nation team won 21-14, 21-18 as the Glasgow 2017 world champions exited.

Zhang won the men's doubles Olympic title at Rio 2016 alongside a different partner in Fu Haifeng, and also clinched mixed doubles gold at London 2012.

Elsewhere in the draw, Indonesia's top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo beat Russia's Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov 21-15, 21-15 to go through.

In the women's doubles, Japan's top two seeded pairs both received byes to round two.

It meant first-ranked Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota and second-rated Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi were not in action today.

China's third seeds Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan, the 2017 world champions, and Indonesia's fourth seeds Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu were also exempt from round one, meaning fifth-seeded Japanese team Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto were the best ranked team having to take to the court.

They suffered defeat, however, losing 21-17, 21-10 to Tang Jinhua and Yu Xiaohan of China.

In the mixed doubles, top seeds and reigning world champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China made it through.

Last month's Asian Games winners beat Indonesians Ricky Karanda Suwardi and Debby Susanto 21-14, 21-12.
