Madrid is set to serve as the host of the Long Distance Triathlon European Championships with action set to take place tomorrow.

Men’s and women’s races will take place in the Spanish capital city, with events taking place over a course above the Olympic standard distance.

The event will see athletes tackle a 3.8 kilometre swim course, before heading out of transition into a 180 kilometre bike leg.

The European Triathlon Union (ETU) race will conclude with a 42km run.

ETU President Renato Bertrandi has claimed Madrid will prove an excellent choice of venue for the event.

“It is great that our important event is held in Spain,” he said.

“Long distance events are getting more and more popular in Europe.

“The characteristics of this course will make the event memorable for all our athletes.

“Swimming is in a fantastic place, the bike course crosses the national park with stunning landscapes and finishes in the heart of Madrid in the Puerta del Sol.”

Age group events will also feature on the programme, along with the elite athletes.
