Hosts Chile clinched the men’s and women’s titles as action concluded today at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Series Open in Santiago.

In the men's competition, Brazil had sat in top spot until the final game, with a two-point advantage over Chile, but a strong and composed performance by the home nation saw them beat their higher-ranked opponents 3-2.

The final was an exciting and tightly-fought affair between two teams determined to end the tournament on a winning note.

Sven Richter got Chile off to the perfect start in the 11th minute when he managed to evade the Brazilian defence to put his team ahead.

The lead was doubled in the final quarter when Nicolas Renz found the net from a penalty corner and the game looked beyond doubt when Franco Becerra made it 3-0.

Brazil fought back in the final five minutes with two goals in quick succession from Lucas Paixão, but it was too little too late and Chile took the three points and first place in the table.

The final match in the women’s competition also decided who took top spot and it was a real tussle between Chile and Uruguay, both of whom had cruised through the tournament unbeaten.

Chile went into the contest with a goal difference advantage over Uruguay and they sealed their success by triumphing 1-0, thanks to Fernanda Villagran’s goal.

Today’s other men’s matches saw Venezuela beat Peru 3-0 to seal third place and Uruguay defeat Bolivia 5-0 to secure fourth spot.

In the earlier women’s matches, Paraguay cemented a third-place finish after overcoming Brazil 4-0.

Peru and Bolivia then played out an intense match to see who would avoid ending up last, with the former emerging as 2-0 winners.

Brazil’s players dominated the men’s top goalscorer charts with Lucas Paixão leading on 14.

He was followed by compatriots Matheus Borges, second on eight, and Joaquín Lopez, third on seven.

The leading goalscorer in the women’s event was Chile’s Maria Maldonado, who finished the competition with 12.

Chile’s men’s and women’s teams, plus Brazil’s men and Uruguay’s women will now appear at one of three FIH Series Finals due to be played in 2019, offering berths into the Olympic qualification events.

Each of these FIH Series Finals will consist of eight teams and will take place throughout the world.
