Denmark’s Mikkel Bjerg won the men’s under-23 individual time trial on the second day of racing at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Road World Championships in Innsbruck.

Bjerg completed the 27.7 kilometres course in 32min 31.05 sec to claim gold.

Brent Van Moer of Belgium took silver, 33.47 seconds behind, while bronze went to Mathias Norsgaard Jorgensen of Denmark, who was 38.30 off the leader.

My whole season has been about preparing for this race," said Bjerg.

"I came here last week and I’ve seen the course every day.

"It’s great to pull it off.

"My feelings during the race were exceptional.

"The next step in my career will be to improve my road racing.”

Earlier in the day, the women's junior individual time trial title was claimed by Dutch rider Rozemarijn Ammerlaan.

She completed the 19.8 kilometres course in 27:02.95, clocking an average speed of 43.920 kilometres per hour.

Camilla Alessio of Italy took silver, 6.80 seconds off the winner’s time, and Britain’s Elynor Backstedt earned bronze at 17.94.

“I don’t have any words for this,” Ammerlaan said. 

"It was really tough, especially the second part where I made the difference. 

"I wasn’t aware of the gaps.

"I didn’t want to know.

"It’s so nice to be the world champion."
