This marked New Zealand's 33rd winning match in a row, including those in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens. 

"I’m just extremely proud, I’m proud of the efforts of the girls," New Zealand captain Sarah Goss said. 

"We played a short pre-season but it’s been great for us because it means that we got to play earlier than we wanted. 

"I thought the girls have performed extremely well. 

"We had girls back in the black jersey who haven’t played in a while and I think they really showed why they are supposed to be here." 

New Zealand had beaten Ireland 34-7 and Canada 28-19 to progress to the final, while the United States were triumphant over Australia 26-5 and England 26-12 .

Canada came third in the competition, dominating France 28-0 to get the bronze medal.

Spain won the Challenge Trophy final, the event for the four bottom teams after the first day of competition, beating Fiji 20-14 to do so.

The two-day event was the first in a series of six, with the next competition due to take place in Dubai on November 29 and 30, before carrying on in Australia, Japan, Canada and France.

The top four teams at the end of the series will qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. 

New Zealand are currently in first, with the US second, Canada third and France fourth.
