Fierce rivals India and Pakistan have been named joint winners of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy after the final was called off due to heavy rain in Muscat.

The two teams were set to play the final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Oman's capital city but a heavy downpour forced organisers to cancel the match.

India won a coin toss to take home the trophy for a year, with Pakistan receiving it the year after.

Gold medals were then given to the Pakistani players, with the Indian participants promised that theirs would be sent to them soon.

India had beaten Japan 3-2 to reach the final, while Pakistan had triumphed in a penalty-shoot out against Malaysia.

Both teams had met previously in the tournament, with India 3-1 winners in the group stage.

India had won the tournament in 2011 and 2016, while Pakistan were champions in 2012 and 2013.

Both teams can technically now add another tournament victory to their record books.

The bronze medal match did manage to take place, with Malaysia beating Japan 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after drawing 2-2 in normal time.

Akashdeep Singh of India was named player of the tournament, while compatriot P.R. Sreejesh was awarded best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Highest scorer of the tournament went to Faisal Saari of Malaysia and Abu Bakkar Mahmood of Pakistan won emerging player of the tournament.
