Despite making their international debut at the World Para Ice Hockey Championships C-Pool, China produced two victories to be promoted to the B-Pool as they defeated hosts Finland today at the Vierumäki Ice Arena.

The two teams were playing for the chance to advance to the higher ranked world grouping as both Finland and China secured wins on the first two days of the competition.

Finland overcame Australia 6-1 while China thrashed the same opposition 40-0.

When the teams met, China initially took the lead with two goals in the first period.

The newcomers then doubled their lead to 4-0 after the second period.

Despite conceding four goals, the Finnish goalkeeper, Timo Karko, was praised for his performance.

He had to produce 26 saves throughout the match to stop the Chinese team adding to their tally.

In the third and final period China only managed to add one goal to the scoreboard and the match finished 5-0.

As the final whistle blew it signified the end of the tournament as well as the match and the medal ceremony followed.

China's victory means they will be promoted to the B-Pool for the 2019 season.

If they continue to be successful in that tournament, they have the opportunity to earn a place in the A-Pool.

The A-Pool event will offer the chance for teams to qualify for the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games, which China will host in Beijing.
