Russia’s 2016 Olympic champion Inna Deriglazova has advanced into the last 32 of the women’s foil competition at the International Fencing Federation World Cup in Algiers.

The 28-year-old beat Iman Blow from the United States by 15 points to 14 to progress, with much of the round of 64 stage still to be completed at the Salle Omnisports Harcha Hacene in the Algerian capital.

Elsewhere in the draw, it was a mixed day for Italy, with some of their high ranking fencers crashing out.

World and Olympic silver medallist Arianna Errigo was knocked out by Poland’s 22-year-old Katarzyna Lachman.

She lost 10-15.

Also losing was former World Cup silver medallist Elisa Vardaro, beaten by another Pole, Martyna Dlugosz, 8-15.

Those matches both came in the top half of the draw, but in the bottom end Italy had a better time of it.

In the next round Martina Batini and Camilla Mancini are scheduled to fence each other after both winning their matches today.

Three-time team world champion Batini won in yet another match up against Poland.

She beat Martyna Jelinska 15-12.

Mancini meanwhile advanced with a win over Japan’s Miho Kurachi.

Action in the women’s foil event is due to continue tomorrow.
