Klimkait earned a crucial victory in the under-57 kilograms category at the Maruzen Intec Arena as she battled team-mate Christa Deguchi for the chance to represent Canada at 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. 

The three-time Grand Prix winner defeated Japan's Asian Games champion Momo Tamaoki with a morote-seoi-nage for the gold medal.

Klimkait, ranked ninth in the world, was the only non-Japanese champion of the tournament so far.

In addition to the silver medal, Japan also claimed the bronze medal through Haruka Funkubo with South Korea’s Youjeong Kwon also completing the podium.

In the women’s under-63kg, Japan’s Masako Doi won her first title as she overcame her team-mate and Asian Games winner Nami Nabekura.

The world number 72 took the win in golden score as Nabekura was penalised for a third and final shido.

It was a clean sweep for Japan on the podium as Aimi Nouchi and Miku Tashiro won the bronze medals.

The reigning world champion Chizuru Arai took another step towards consolidating her position as  the favourite at her home Olympics with a dominant performance in the women’s under-70kg category.

Arai beat Sweden’s Anna Bernholm in the final with Japan’s Saki Niizoe and France’s Margaux Pinot claiming the bronze medals.

In the day two finals for the men, Japan’s Shohei Ono and Takeshi Sasaki took the spoils.

Reigning Olympic champion Ono won the under-73kg category after he rolled three-time world champion and rival Masashi Ebinuma for a waza-ari.

The Japanese team-mates were joined on the podium by Sweden’s Tommy Macias and Japan’s Arata Tatsukawa.

In the under-81kg competition, it was another all-Japanese final as Sasaki took on Kenya Kohara.

Nothing separated the two athletes in normal time but Sasaki managed to pin his team-mate for 20 seconds and ippon in golden score.

Japan’s Takanori Nagase joined Turkey’s Vedat Albayrak as the bronze medallists.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with the heavyweight categories.
