Olympic champion Mikael Kingsbury claimed the 50th win of his career on the International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing World Cup tour by coming out on top at the season-opening stop in Ruka in Finland today.

The Canadian star triumphed with a final-run score of 88.14 on the "Battery Run" course.

France’s Benjamin Cavet finished second with 86.45, while Sweden's Walter Wallberg came third with 82.38.

Victory for Kingsbury sets him on the right path to dominate yet another World Cup season.

In 2017-2018, he finished no lower than second in any competition, set a record run of consecutive wins by a men’s moguls skier in January, when he increased his tally to 13, and won the Olympic gold medal in Pyeongchang.

He also claimed both the overall moguls and freestyle crystal globes for the seventh-straight season to pass the US's Hannah Kearney for most moguls wins and inch closer to Switzerland's Conny Kissling’s record of 10 freestyle overall titles.

In today’s women’s event, France’s Perrine Laffont prevailed with a score of 82.26.

It continues the 20-year-old’s excellent form from last season, which saw her win the Pyeongchang 2018 gold medal and also take the crystal globe for top spot in the overall moguls World Cup rankings.

Kazakhstan’s Yulia Galysheva finished second with 81.48, while the United States’ Tess Johnson came third with 75.85.

The venue in Ruka is the first of nine that moguls skiers will visit this season.

They will next travel to Thaiwoo ski resort in China to compete in a double contest.

Action is due to be held on December 15 and 16.
