The International Ski Federation Ski Cross World Cup circuit will continue tomorrow with the second event of the season set to go ahead in the Italian resort of Innichen.

The competition should really be the fourth on the 2018-2019 calendar, but a lack of early season snow in the Alps forced cancellations in the French resort of Val Thorens and the Austrian town of Montafon.

In the eventual season opener in Arosa, Switzerland took both the men's and women's titles on home snow through Jonas Lenherr and Fanny Smith respectively.

Smith, who won bronze at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, took her victory by just a finger length over defending World Cup champion Sandra Naeslund from Sweden.

Finishing third was the Sochi 2014 Olympic champion Marielle Thompson from Canada.

In the men's race Lenherr won in more comfortable fashion, beating Victor Oehling Norberg of Sweden who took second and another Swiss Alex Fiva in third.

All of the medallists are competing again in Innichen, with qualifying action scheduled to take place tomorrow, before knockout action goes ahead on Friday (December 21) and Saturday (December 22).

Also starting tomorrow is the first stop of the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup season, which is taking place in Cervinia.

Just like on the skiing tour, the snowboard circuit has also had to deal with early season cancellations.

As a result, the FIS announced last week that Cervinia would host an extra event.

The new event will take place the day after the first in the Italian resort, which was already scheduled to take place this week.

This week’s competition will be the first of the new season, after the original season opener in Montafon was cancelled.

Finishing top in the overall standings last season were Pierre Vaultier and Michela Moioli on the men’s and women's sides respectively, who also each won in Pyeongchang.

Both Frenchman Vaultier and Italy’s Moioli are on the entry lists for this week’s competition.

Moioli enters Cervinia as the defending champion on home snow, but Vaultier was beaten in the Italian resort last year by Omar Visintin.

Qualifying in both the men's and women's events will start tomorrow, with the first World Cup finals scheduled for Friday (December 21).
