China are guaranteed success in the women’s singles event at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hungarian Open after four of the country’s players advanced to the semi-finals at the Budapest Olympic Hall today.

With two of the quarter-finals being all-Chinese encounters, wins for second seed Chen Meng against Romania’s Bernadette Szocs and defending champion Wang Manyu against Portugal’s Yu Fu ensured that only one nation will be represented in the penultimate round.

Chen came from behind to triumph 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5, 11-4, while Wang prevailed 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4.

The other last-eight ties saw top seed Zhu Yuling beat Chen Xingtong 11-4, 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 and fourth seed Liu Shiwen defeat Sun Yingsha 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, 13-11.

In the semi-finals, Chen faces Wang and Zhu goes up against Liu.

Earlier today in the last-16, Chen beat Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manika Batra of India 11-6, 11-5, 11-5, 11-2 and Wang defeated China’s Sin Mingyang 11-7, 11-1, 3-11, 11-4, 11-3.

Zhu overcame Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu 11-3, 11-7, 11-2, 11-4 and Liu benefited from a walkover victory against Romania’s Elizabeta Samara.

In the men's singles event, defending champion Fan Zhendong earned his place in the quarter-finals with an 11-9, 15-17, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 14-12 win over Chinese Taipei's Chuang Chih-Yuan.

"I had to be careful at the beginning of the match because he starts really strong in every match - my goal was to prevent him making a good start," Fan said.

"I changed the rhythm well in match. 

"I will continue to fight in the later rounds."

Standing between Fan and the last four is Russia's Alexander Shibaev, who beat Hong Kong's Wong Chun Ting 11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.

Second seed Xu Xin is also through to the quarter-finals thanks to an 11-6, 11-8, 7-11, 10-12, 9-11, 11-6, 13-11 victory over fellow Chinese Liang Jingkun.

Xu's next opponent is South Korea's Lim Jonghoon after he defeated England's Liam Pitchford 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-13, 8-11, 11-9, 14-12.
