The opening day of the International Table Tennis Federation Pan America Cup in Guaynabo in Puerto Rico came to an end with Ecuador’s Alberto Miño and Mexico’s Yadira Silva finishing top of their respective groups in the men’s and women’s competitions.

Playing at the Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales, number nine seed Silva in group three beat number seven seed Paulina Vega from Chile in her last match 7-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5.

Prior to that Silva saw off Estefania Ramirios from El Salvador 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5.

Winning the group sees Silva book her spot in the quarter-finals, while also making it through as group winners were Lily Zhang from the United States, who won group one, Brazil’s Gui Lin, the winner of group two, and Canada’s Alicia Cote, who came top in group four.

On the men’s side Miño triumphed in group two with wins over the Dominican Republic’s Samuel Galvez and Allan Gutierrez from Guatemala.

In his first match the sixth seed saw off Gutierrez 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 and then beat Galvez in an even tighter contest, 11-8, 11-2, 10-12, 9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-3.

"I was feeling really good in the first two games [against Galzez]," he said.

"Then I became passive.

"He became confident, he was good with the first attack, good in the counter topspin rallies.

"After the fifth game I returned service using the banana technique.

"I played more aggressively, stronger on the first ball and I played with more spin."

The other groups were taken by Nikhil Kumar from the US, who won group one, Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador, who triumphed in group three, and Canada’s Jeremy Hazin, who finished top in group four.

Tomorrow both the men’s and women’s quarter-finals are due to go ahead before both draws end on Sunday (February 3) with the semi-finals and finals.

Top seed in the men’s draw Hugo Calderano from Brazil is scheduled to face the winner of group three Afanador.
