Swimmer Lizzie Simmonds has been elected as vice-chair of the British Olympic Association's (BOA) Athletes' Commission, the body has announced.

The two-time Olympian, who finished fourth in the 200 metre backstroke at London 2012, was elected by her peers on the Commission and will now serve a two-year term.

"Since being elected to the BOA Athletes' Commission in 2016 I have relished the opportunity to use my own experience and the athlete perspective to promote and support the BOA's mission and I am delighted that I have been voted by my fellow Athletes' Commission members to the role of vice-chair," she said.

In her role as vice-chair the 28-year-old will support chair Ben Hawes with "the leadership and strategic direction of the Commission".

She will also act as an athlete representative for the BOA.

"Lizzie is extremely passionate about supporting the athlete community and has played an active and engaged role on the Athletes' Commission for the past two years," retired hockey player Hawes said.

"I look forward to working with her to continue to drive an athlete centric agenda within the BOA and the Olympic family."

In all 13 current and former athletes sit on the Commission including basketball player Eric Boateng, Olympic gold medal winning hockey player Georgie Twigg and gold and silver medal winning track cyclist Callum Skinner.

It plays a key role as part of the BOA, contributing to a variety of projects such as the development of the team's values and philosophy, team kit, athlete opportunities and transition, team member agreements, inputting into accreditation panels and Games-time welfare planning.

The Commission also works with the BOA and other stakeholders to ensure teams competing at Summer, Winter and Youth Olympic Games are as best prepared as possible.
