Xi visited the headquarters, located at the Shougang Industrial Park in Shijingshan District, to learn about the preparation for the event in three years' time and the planning and construction of the venues and infrastructure.

He called on the Organising Committee to complete all preparation tasks to the best of their ability, adding that venue construction must meet Olympic standards and be completed on time.

Xi also said that during venue construction advanced technological approaches should be applied, energy-saving and environmental friendly requirements should be strictly enforced, environmental and cultural relics should be well protected, and that Chinese styles should be on full display.

In 2022, Beijing will become the first host of both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Xi insists that China must fulfil the "solemn commitments" it made to the world.

"Hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics is an important support to the co-ordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region," he said, adding that Hebei province must develop together with Beijing.

Chinese vice-premier Han Zheng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, accompanied Xi on the inspection tour of the preparation work for Beijing 2022.

The 65-year-old President also visited the Beijing 2022 office building, meeting with some of the staff and volunteers there.

During his trip to the national winter sports training centre, Xi stressed promoting sportsmanship with Chinese characteristics, boosting co-ordinated development of mass sports, competitive sports and the sports industry, and speeding up building China into a country strong in winter sports.

Last month, Chinese vice-premier Sun Chunlan urged athletes from the country to learn from more established winter sports nations to ensure they perform at their best at Beijing 2022. 

Sun met athletes from various national Winter Olympic sports teams, including those in short track speed skating, figure skating and curling, in the Chinese capital.

She said athletes should take full advantage of competing in major international sports events in the build-up to the Games to improve their chances of success.

It follows the International Ice Hockey Federation telling China their teams need to improve if they are to justify their automatic host nation qualification spot for Beijing 2022 following concerns over the standard of their men's and women's squads.
