On day four at the Al Thiqah Club for Disabled in Sharjah, Russia had a chance to claim both golds.

In the women's foil final which went ahead first they fell to a 45-20 defeat against the Italian team of Andrea Mogos, Paralympic champion Beatrice Vio and former world champion Loredana Trigilia.

Russia went ahead initially when Alena Evdokimova beat Mogos 2-1 in the first match, but Vio then put Italy in the lead with a 9-3 win over Viktoria Boykova.

The Italians only lost one further match out of seven, when Mogos fell to a 8-5 defeat against Iuliia Maya in the penultimate match.

Russia's men secured gold for themselves in their team épée event when Artur Yusupov, Maxim Shaburov and Alexander Kuzyukov saw off Poland's trio 45-25.

In a dominant performance, across the nine matches the Russians lost only one, when Kuzyukov fell to a 7-5 defeat against Michal Nalewajek in the fifth.

In the athletics at the Althiqah Club, India's Balasubramanian Rajkumar backed up a win in the men's T40 200 metres yesterday with victory in the T40 100m today.

In another race which only featured Indians, Rajkumar won in 15.54sec.

Devappa More, who came third yesterday, finished second in 17.25, while Rajashetty Kollangi came third in 19.95.

The only women's track event to go ahead today was the women's T37/38/45 200m, which was won by Germany's Lindy Ave.

The European silver medallist, who also won the 100m yesterday, picked up her second gold in a time of 27.36.

In an exact repeat of yesterday's top three South Africa's Sheryl James came second and Germany's Isabelle Foerder finished third.

Meanwhile at the American University Sharjah in the badminton, India's Pramod Bhagat continued his strong form to finish unbeaten in the men's singles SL3 division.

Having won twice yesterday in the round robin format, he beat Thailand's second seed Busnsun Mongkhon 21-18, 21-15 in today's action to finish top of the group and win the event.

In the women's singles SL3, SL4 and SL5 competition Thailand's Samownkorn Photisuppaiboon claimed the gold.

With knockout action taking place today she thrashed India's Raghad Malesh in the semi-finals 21-1, 21-2, before seeing off another Indian Parul Dalsukhbhai Parmar over three games, 13-21, 21-19, 21-14.

In the swimming pool at the same venue, Thailand and India shared all the medals.

With nine races contested Thailand picked up five golds and India four.

Only one swimmer from a country other than Thailand or India took part, which was Estonia's Tanel Tahevali.

He finished fifth in the men's 14-34 400m LC freestyle.
