Paralympic champion Benjamin Daviet of France has continued his excellent form with a gold medal in the men's middle-distance standing biathlon event at the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships in Prince George.

Daviet won three gold medals at last month's World Cup in Östersund and has continued this form into the World Championships, triumphing in the men's middle-distance standing biathlon event today. 

He recorded a winning time of 36mins 24.4secs, finishing ahead of Nils-Erik Ulset of Norway in 38:34.5 and Mark Arendz in 38:39.0.

"Very good shooting, very good skiing and Mark Arendz is a good athlete, but he had one miss," Daviet said.

Ukrainian athletes completely dominated the women's standing event, with Liudmyla Liashenko taking the gold medal in a time of 37:22.4.

Her compatriots Yuliia Batenkova-Bauman and Oleksandra Kononova came second and third with times of 38:09.3 and 38:32.0 respectively. 

"I’m really happy and proud for my teammates who also shared the podium with me," Liashenko said.

"It’s a proud moment for our country."

Oksana Masters of the United States overtook her teammate Kendall Gretsch in the final lap of the women's middle-distance sitting biathlon event to win in 41:35.7.

Gretsch had to make do with silver after finishing in a time of 42:23.9, while Germany's Andrea Eskau was third with 45:07.8.


Ukraine's 19-year-old Taras Rad won the men's sitting competition, leading from the start to finish in 43:15.0.

Behind him was Canada's Collin Cameron in 44:45.5, with the 30-year-old only beginning to compete in the sport in 2016. 

Euihyun Shin of South Korea came third with a time of 45:02.7. 

Clara Klug won the women's middle-distance visually impaired biathlon race, with the German also leading the World Cup standings for the same event.

She crossed the line in 39:48.8, beating Ukraine's Oksana Shyshkova and Andriana Kapustei in 40:29.1 and 46:19.3 respectively. 

Belarus's Yury Holub triumphed in the men's competition with a time of 37:07.0.

Ukraine’s Vitaliy Luk’yanenko finished second in 39:36.3 and France’s Anthony Chalencon completed the podium in a time of 39:54.5.

The World Championships are due to continue in Prince George tomorrow with the middle distance events for cross-country.
