Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have named TANAKA HOLDINGS as a precious metals and jewellery sponsor.

The jewellery firm, founded in 1885, joins the third domestic tier of the Tokyo 2020 Sponsorship Programme, bringing the total number of domestic partners to 59.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome TANAKA as a Tokyo 2020 official supporter," Tokyo 2020 President Yoshirō Mori said.

"TANAKA has made significant contributions to society, not only through the creation of jewellery items but through state-of-the-art technology utilising precious metals in various fields.

"In addition, the company has long been devoted to the development of Para sports.

"We are delighted to be able to count on their support."

Akira Tanae, the chief executive of TANAKA, said she is "extremely happy" the firm has signed an agreement with Tokyo 2020.

"Our business domain is precious metals, and we work vigorously every day toward the creation of a prosperous society," Tanae said.

"Moving forward, as a Tokyo 2020 official supporter, we hope to contribute to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games by putting effort into realising an inclusive society, creating a legacy for the future and developing sports in Japan."

It was also announced earlier this week that TANAKA HOLDINGS will produce and donate gold, silver, and bronze medals to the top three men and women finishers in this year's Tokyo Marathon on March 3.

Made from pure gold, silver, and bronze, the medals will be approximately 65millimetres in diameter.

The pure gold medal weighs approximately 200 grams, the pure silver medal approximately 110 grams, and the pure bronze medal approximately 90 grams.

They have provided the medals for the race since 2007.
