The Shougang Park has already begun to be regenerated prior to the Olympic Games, with the industrial park set to host big air competitions.

Athletes will use ramps set off the side of former 70 metres high cooling towers in the former industrial district.

Big air was added to the Olympic programme for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games.

The event, a part of the Snowboard World Championships since 2003, is a discipline where the competitor rides down a hill and performs tricks after launching off very large jumps.

Athletes perform complex tricks in the air, aiming to attain sizeable height and distance and a clean landing. 

All of the other snowboarding events at the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be staged at the Genting Ski Resort in Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, around 160 kilometres from Beijing.

Beijing 2022's headquarters are also based in the park, having reached an agreement with the Shougang Group to use a compound.

The latest plans from the Beijing Municipal Government include establishing museums and leisure facilities at the site, according to China Daily.

These will be constructed around the sport facilities being prepared for the Games, which include a skiing facility and a training centre.

It is expected that the facilities will be used after the Games to host international events and exhibitions.

Constructing lakes and park areas is also planned, with the local Government reportedly seeking to create an eco-friendly space.

An "artificial intelligence centre" is also included in the plans.

It is envisaged the location will be part of a new 5G network.

The latest proposals are claimed to be part of plans to transform the industrial park into a Beijing landmark by 2035.

The plans are being overseen by Beijing's Development and Reform Commission.
