The 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion Chaudhary Saurabh won the men's 10 metre air pistol with a new world record score at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in New Delhi.

Shooting at his home range, the 16-year-old Indian managed a total score of 245.0 points to finish in front of Serbia's Damir Mikec and China's 2008 Olympic champion Wei Pang.

His score marked the second world record set by an Indian athlete at the event, after Apurvi Chandela achieved a new world's best score in the women's 10m air rifle contest.

Finishing second and third today, Mikec and Pang managed scores of 239.3 and 215.2, while for coming in the top two both Saurabh and Mikec gained Tokyo 2020 Olympic quota places for their countries.

In all three finals went ahead today at the Dr. Kami Singh Shooting Range, with the other two coming in the men's 50m rifle three positions and women's 25m pistol.

The women's event was won in another world record, as Hungary's 21-year-old Veronika Major hit 40 out of a possible 50 targets.

Along with her gold medal, the youngster also picks up an Olympic quota spot for her efforts.

China's Zhang Jingjing gained the other quota spot by coming second, hitting 33 targets.

She finished second after going through a shoot-off with Iran's Haniyeh Rostasmiyan, who eventually finished third with 30 hits.

In the men's three positions final, which was the first of the day, Hungary claimed another gold through 22-year-old Istvan Peni who took victory with 459.1 points.

Rio 2016 silver medallist Sergey Kamenskiy from Russia came second once again with 459.0 points, while Italy's Marco De Nicolo took bronze with 444.5.

In that event the Olympic quota places went to Peni and De Nicolo, as Kamenskiy had already won one for Russia at last year's ISSF World Championship.

Further action will go ahead tomorrow with the men's 10m air rifle final.

The men's 25m rapid fire pistol contest will also start tomorrow.

No Olympic quota spots will be available in that event after India refused visas to two Pakistani athletes hoping to compete.

The decision to deny Ghulam Mustafa Bashir and Khalil Ahmed visas came in the wake of a Pakistani militant group claiming responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing in Pulwama in Kashmir on February 14, which killed 40 members of the Indian police force.

The International Olympic Committee responded by revoking the Olympic qualification status of the 25m event.

They also said they would "suspend all discussions" with India regarding applications to host future competitions.
