Russia's Alexander Lifanov led 36 qualifiers into the men's individual final at the International Modern Pentathlon Union World Cup in Cairo.

Lifanov tallied 1,130 points at the Platinum Club in the Egyptian capital to show strong form before Saturday's (March 2) fight for the medals.

Egypt's home athlete Ahmed Elgendy, the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic champion and the junior and youth world champion, scored 1,129 to go through in joint second place.

Lithuania's Justinas Kinderis also tallied 1,129.

Other pentathletes to safely get through include former world champions Valentin Belaud of France and Pavlo Tymoshchenko of Ukraine.

France's Valentin Prades, the world number two, and Belarus' world number five Ilya Palazkov also did enough to reach the final. 

The women's final will take place in Cairo tomorrow across the fencing, swimming, riding and run/shoot disciplines.

After the men's final on Saturday, the mixed relay will conclude the World Cup on Sunday (March 3).

The competition is the first World Cup of the season.
