USA Boxing executive director Mike McAtee confirmed to insidethegames that the organisation's President must come from one of its independent directors after it changed its bylaws.

It means Brown will have to leave his position but it set to remain part of the Board of Directors.

The change followed recommendations made by the USOC in December to improve USA Boxing's governance.

The exact reasons for the threat of decertification have not been revealed by either USA Boxing or the USOC but Sports Business Journal reported it resulted from an investigation into a conflicts interest.

Brown was also the subject of a petition in May of last year, calling for him to be removed from office.

"We sent USA Boxing a letter based on an external audit of the Federation’s board practices, and we requested certain reforms around the composition of the board, the leadership of the board, and the number of independent directors," Rick Adams, USOC chief of sport performance and National Governing Body services, told Sports Business Journal.

"At this juncture, we’re working collaboratively with USA Boxing."

USA Boxing's board will now comprise 13 members, six of which are independent.

Four new independent directors are set to be confirmed by USA Boxing later this month, joining the two which currently sit on the Board.

"USA Boxing’s Board of Directors believes the accepted recommendations will improve our overall governances and service to our members," McAtee added.

USA Boxing, whose former President was International Boxing Association executive director Tom Virgets, was among those who backed Gafur Rakhimov when he was elected President of the world governing body last year.

It came despite Rakhimov remaining on a United States Treasury Department list as "one of Uzbekistan's leading criminals".

USOC last year began a process to decertify USA Gymnastics as the governing body for the sport in the country after the organisation failed to adequately respond to the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.
