The stadium is located in Pagani, which is about 40 kilometres from the centre of Naples.

Work will include adding waterproof covering to the stands and installing new seats with backrests.

Improvements will also be made in the changing rooms and press box, while upgrades to the electric and water systems have been promised.

The stadium, in the province of Salerno, is currently home to football club Paganese Calcio 1926.

Work at the venue is said to be one of the last projects to get underway for Naples 2019.

"It is one of the last works that had not started yet," said Naples 2019 commissioner Gianluca Basile.

"It is a high-quality project.

"We will have limited time available for the implementation of the interventions. 

"Now we must work hard."

Football matches at the Universiade will be shared around the region, which games also taking place in Caserta, Montesarchio, Cava De Tirreni, Benevento, Cercola, Eboli, Nocera and Casoria. 

Naples 2019 will run between July 3 and July 14.

The Italian city was officially confirmed as the host in May 2016 following a reopened bidding process after Brasilia withdrew in January 2015.

The Brazilian capital was unable to meet financial commitments. 

It means the Italian city has been given limited time to prepare.
