A group of seven athletes could still mathematically win the women’s overall title going into the last International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup of the season in Holmenkollen in Oslo.

Italians Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi are the best placed to triumph in the Norwegian capital with the pair currently tied for first place in the standings on 852 points each.

They are followed by Norway’s Marte Olsbu Røiseland with 753 points, Slovakia’s Anastasiya Kuzmina with 724, defending champion Kaisa Makarainen of Finland with 614 and Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg 609.

Completing the list of contenders is seventh-placed Slovakian Paulína Fialková with 595 points.

Although Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Bø has already wrapped up the men’s overall crown, the first of his career, the runners-up spot is still up for grabs.

Trailing Bø by 314 points in second place is Russia’s Alexander Loginov with 796.

Loginov could be passed, however, with France’s Quentin Fillon Maillet his nearest challenger on 761 points.

Another Frenchman, Simon Desthieux, is fourth with 753 points, while Germany’s Arnd Peiffer is fifth with 666.

Action in Oslo is due to begin tomorrow with the women’s 7.5 kilometres sprint competition.

It is scheduled to be followed by the men’s 10km sprint on Friday (March 22) before the men’s 12.5km and women’s 10km pursuit events take place on Saturday (March 23).

Concluding the programme will be the men’s 15km and women’s 12.5km mass start competitions on Sunday (March 24).

A previous nine IBU World Cups have been held this season.
