Hosts Hong Kong produced an upset to beat Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals of the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships today.

The home team suffered an early blow at Queen Elizabeth Stadium when their men’s doubles pairing of Chang Tak Ching and Yeung Ming Nok suffered a 21-16, 23-21 loss to Lu Ching-yao and Yang Po-han.

Cheung Ngan Yi drew Hong Kong level by winning her singles match 11-21, 21-6, 21-7 against Liang Ting-yu.

Ng Ka Long then put the hosts in front, overcoming Lee Chai-hao 17-21, 21-14, 21-17 in the men’s singles.

Chinese Taipei took the match to a decider when Pai Yu-po and Wu Ti-jung won the women’s doubles match 21-17, 22-20 against Ng Wing Yung and Yeung Nga Ting.

But Hong Kong secured a 3-2 victory when their mixed doubles pairing of Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau were 22-20, 21-17 winners over Tseng Min-hao and Hsieh Pei-shan.

Their reward is a semi-final match against second seeds China, who eased past Thailand in their last-eight tie.

He Jiting and Du Yue gave China an ideal start by winning their mixed doubles match 21-13, 21-13 against Nipitphon Phuangphuapet and Savitree Amitrapai.

Lu Guangzu then triumphed 21-13, 21-19 in his men’s singles clash with Kantaphon Wangcharoen to take China to the brink of victory.

The result was sealed when Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong secured a 21-15, 21-13 victory over Tanupat Viriyangkura and Tinn Isriyanet in the men’s doubles.

With China’s passage to the semi-finals secured, the remaining two matches of the tie did not take place.

Defending champions Japan won their quarter-final 3-0, but their players were challenged by Malaysia.

Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi came from one game down in their men’s doubles match to beat Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani 19-21, 21-16, 21-15.

Aya Ohori then beat Ho Yen Mei 21-9, 25-23 in the women’s singles, before Kanta Tsuneyama completed Japan’s win by overcoming Cheam June Wei 13-21, 23-21, 21-15.

Indonesia will hope to claim a shock success over Japan in the semi-finals after they secured a 3-0 victory against Singapore.

Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto combined to win their men’s doubles match 21-16, 19-21, 21-19 against Singapore’s Loh Kean Hean and Toh Han Zhuo.

Ruselli Hartawan then won her women’s singles match 21-14, 21-18 against Yeo Jia Min, before Shesar Hiren Rhustavito sealed Indonesia’s progress by winning the men’s singles tie 17-21, 21-14, 21-7.

Semi-final ties are scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Play also continued today at the Badminton World Federation Orléans Masters, a World Tour Super 100 tournament in France.

China’s Li Shifeng booked his place in the men’s singles semi-finals by beat Spain’s Luís Enrique Peñalver 21-19, 21-14.

Dutch second seed Mark Caljouw overcame Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen 21-13, 21-18 to continue his run.

Women’s singles top seed Kirsty Gilmour is also due to be be in quarter-final action with the Scottish player due to face Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet.
