World number one Kento Momota suffered a surprise second round defeat at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Open.

The Japanese star had come from a game down in his opening match at the BWF Super 750 event to advance two days ago.

He was faced with the same task after losing the first game to Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

Christie prevented a comeback as he sealed a 22-20, 21-15 win to advance to the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event.

He is now due to face Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen as the recent winner of the India Open clinched a hard fought 21-11, 16-21, 21-17 win over China’s Lu Guangzu.

India’s Srikanth Kidambi lost to Axelsen in the final in New Delhi last week and could potentially clash with the Dane in the semi-finals in Malaysia.

Kidambi moved into the last eight by beating Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab 21-11, 21-15.

His reward is a match against China’s Chen Long, as the reigning Olympic champion won 22-20, 21-12 against Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

Kanta Tsuneyama beat Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammasin 21-19, 20-22, 21-11, with the Japanese player now set to face China’s Lin Dan, a 25-23, 21-8 winner against Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand.

Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto came from a game down to beat Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke 18-21, 21-15, 21-9.

He is now set to face second seed Shi Yugi of China, a 21-18, 21-19 winner over Denmark’s Anders Antonsen.

Women’s top seed Tai Tzu-Ying, from Chinese Taipei, won her women's singles second round match 21-16, 21-14 against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand to secure a quarter-final against another Thai, Ratchanok Intanon.

Intanon, the newly crowned India Open champion, beat the United States’ Zhang Beiwen 23-25, 21-14, 21-16.

Chen Yufei won an all-Chinese match against Chen Xiaoxin 21-12, 21-14 to reach the last eight.

She is now due to face South Korea’s Sung Ji-Hyun, a 21-18, 21-7 winner against India’s P.V. Sindhu.

Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, the tournament's second seed, won 21-18, 21-18 in her match with China’s Li Xuerui.

Okuhara is next set to take on China’s He Bingjiao, a 21-15, 22-20 winner against Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour.

Akane Yamaguchi beat her Japanese compatriot Sayaka Takanashi 21-16, 15-21, 21-16 to set up a quarter-final with Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong, who won 21-16, 12-21, 21-10 against Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei.
