Chilean table tennis player Matías Pino has been named as the winner of the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC) athlete of the month award for March.

Pino was one of five nominees for the monthly prize.

He received 43 per cent of the public vote to emerge as the clear winner.

Pino had been nominated for the accolade after securing a silver medal in the men's singles class six at the Lignano Open in Italy.

It was claimed the achievement made headlines in Chile.

Pino finished ahead of Brazilian dressage rider Rodolpho Riskalla, who was second with 36 per cent of the vote.

Riskalla had enjoyed success on debut at the Al Shaqab Para dressage competition in Doha during March, where he won all three of his classes.

Colombia's Diego Duenas, who took the gold medal in the men’s scratch C4 at the Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Apeldoorn, place third.

Duenas received 15 per cent of the vote.

The nominations were completed by the Argentinian blind football team and United States’ snowboarder Noah Elliot.

Argentina had retained their title at the Blind Football World Grand Prix by defeating England 2-0 in the final in Tokyo.

Elliot was shortlisted after winning his first world title in the men’s cross SB-LL1 in Finland.

Nominations were compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees from across the continent.

Colombia's Johanna Sossa and Johana Martinez took the January award after progressing to the World Team Cup wheelchair tennis finals.

The February accolade went to Mexico's Rebeca Valenzuela Alvarez.

She broke the Americas record of 13.15 metres in the women’s shot put F12 on her way to gold at the Dubai Grand Prix.
