The strategy is underpinned by four key areas, double participation, a world-class participation programme, a professional domestic league and a world-leading national governing body (NGB). 

These were shaped by an extensive consultation process with wheelchair basketball participants. 

The first objective, double participation, will see British Wheelchair Basketball aim for a dramatic participation growth.

That would help build the schools and universities' network, create new recreational opportunities to play the sport, establish a strong Great Britain player pathway, generate thriving competitive leagues, nurture a sustainable workforce and create a successful national club and community partnership delivery network.

As part of the objective for a world-class performance programme, British Wheelchair Basketball will seek to form a Great Britain academy to ensure continued international medal success, with the men's team winning the 2018 World Championships and the women's side securing silver.

The academy will develop players to feed into selected senior and junior Great Britain squads. 

British Wheelchair Basketball will also create a professional domestic league which attracts and retains the world's best talent.

Alongside this, there will be more high quality, competitive playing opportunities for amateur athletes, including the formation of local leagues. 

British Wheelchair Basketball hopes to become a world-leading NGB by delivering regular high-quality broadcast and spectator opportunities and welcoming new commercial investors. 

“The opportunities both domestically and internationally are impressive," said British Wheelchair Basketball chair Professor Philip Wilson.

"British Wheelchair Basketball has a compelling, competitive UK league which is continuously drawing new audiences to the sport, both spectators and participants.

“Our four strategic objectives have been borne from actively listening to our participants and defining how they want to see the sport evolve and grow. 

"It will be an exciting journey for British Wheelchair Basketball as the sport breaks new ground and we proudly establish the United Kingdom as the premier nation worldwide for wheelchair basketball.”

Responsible for the successful delivery of the new strategy is British Wheelchair Basketball’s chief executive Lisa Pearce.

“The announcement of British Wheelchair Basketball’s five-year strategy sets out an extremely positive shared future vision for the sport," she said.

"This members’ strategy brings to life the participants’ vision for the future of the game and their ambitions for growth.

“We know our sport plays a critical role in our participants’ social and physical development with 70 per cent of members being inactive before playing our sport. 

"We also know that 78 per cent of our participants have reported a positive impact on their mental health and personal development.

“I have no doubt that the delivery of this strategy will ultimately benefit all of society with more lives being positively influenced through their interaction with this incredible sport.”

The five-year strategy follows British Wheelchair Basketball's rebrand last year, with the NGB unveiling a fresh brand identity and logo.
