Double world team champion Tamara Alekszejev struck individual gold as she triumphed in the women's final at her home International Modern Pentathlon Union World Cup in Székesfehérvár.

The 30-year-old finished top of the standings with a total of 1,402 points.

Alekszejev, a member of the Hungarian teams which won team gold medals at the 2016 and 2018 World Championships, beat Turkey's İlke Özyüksell by eight points.

Özyüksell ended the competition on a tally of 1,394 points, while Anna Buriak of Russia claimed the bronze medal on 1,370 points.

"I’m very happy and I can’t believe I am the winner," said Alekszejev.

"Fencing was perfect and the riding section was perfect."

Alekszejev added: "My last shooting was not good because I was looking at Ilke and I thought, ‘Oh my God’. 

"After the shooting I just stayed strong for 800 metres [run-shoot]

"Today was very hard but I am very happy."

Top qualifier and Olympic silver medallist, France's Elodie Clouvel, could only manage 20th, two places below London 2012 champion Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania.

The event is due to continue tomorrow with the men's final.
