South Korea’s Kim Mi-na secured a meeting with top seed Inna Deriglazova at the International Fencing Federation Foil Grand Prix series in Shanghai.

Kim came through the early stages of competition at Jingan Sports centre to book a place in the last 64.

She overcame Hong Kong’s Kimberley Cheung 15-14 in her first match, before securing a 15-10 win over France’s Morgane Patru.

Her reward is a meeting with Deriglazova, with the Russian having received byes through the early rounds of competition.

Olympic champion Deriglazova is seeking to defend her Grand Prix title at the series-ending event.

World champion Alice Volpi, ranked second, could face the Russian should they both progress to the final.

The Italian fencer will also face South Korean opposition in her first match of the competition.

Chae Song-oh will take on the second seed following her two victories in the early rounds of the event.

She recorded a 14-8 win over Canada’s Kelleigh Ryan, before beating Japan’s Sumire Tsuji 15-12.

The latter stages of the women’s event will take place on Sunday (May 19).

The men’s competition will begin tomorrow, Britain’s Richard Kruse aiming to defend his title.
