Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar became the youngest winner of an International Cycling Union WorldTour stage race as he wrapped up overall victory at the Tour of California.

Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen also tasted glory as both the men's and women's events concluded with stages from Santa Clarita to Pasadena.

Twenty-year-old Pogačar, racing for UAE Team Emirates, grabbed the overall lead from American Tejay van Garderen yesterday after triumphing on stage six at the top of Mount Baldy.

He enjoyed a 16-second advantage over Colombia's EF Education First man Sergio Higuita and kept hold of the general classification by finishing in the pack as today's race ended in a bunch sprint.

Dutchman Cees Bol of Team Sunweb claimed the stage victory as the 23-year-old pipped Slovakia's three-time world road race champion Peter Sagan, who won the opening leg, to the line.

Jasper Philipsen, another UAE Team Emirates racer, was third on the day for Belgium as the seven-stage race concluded.

The winning time after the 141 kilometre journey was 2 hours 53min 16sec which was awarded to all of the top 16.

Pogačar's 20th-place finish was enough for the overall title in a combined 32:55:12 as he captured the biggest race win of his young career.

This was 16 seconds quicker than Higuita with Kasper Asgreen of Denmark and Deceuninck-Quick-Step 17 seconds adrift in third.

An 11-man breakaway had initially looked to put pressure on Pogačar's lead but this was eventually reeled in to set up the bunch sprint.

"Today was amazing, and it has been all week," the Slovenian said.

"The Mount Baldy stage was the key moment for me at this Tour of California, but this victory took the whole week to build up to.

"It's the most beautiful victory of my career and now I'm just going to focus on building and progressing as a rider."

In the women's race, Italian Elisa Balsamo emerged as the winner following the sprint after a 115.5km course.

Fifteen riders attempted a breakaway but van der Breggen, the reigning Olympic road race champion riding for Boels-Dolmans, took the initiative to reel this in.

The 29-year-old led the three-stage race from the beginning after winning the opening leg and enjoyed a 29-second gap over American Katie Hall, who won last year's Tour of California, going into today's action.

All of the top 34 were given the time of 3:19:57 as Balsamo finished in front of Cuba's Arlenis Sierra, riding for Astana, and American Leigh Ann Ganzar, racing for Hagens Berman-Supermint, respectively.

Van der Breggen came home 17th to win the Women's WorldTour event with an overall time of 8:32:34.

Hall, who won stage two, was 29 seconds back as runner-up with South Africa's Ashleigh Moolman Pasio finishing 1:06 adrift in third for CCC Liv.
