A total of 149 competitors are registered for the event, staged at the base of the Vista Bahn gondola in the heart of Mountain Plaza, in a final attempt to climb the season rankings.

Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret has already been crowned women’s champion after her win in Munich last month, but second and third are still up for grabs with France’s Fanny Gibert and Japan’s Akiyo Noguchi vying for the positions on totals of 268 and 240 points respectively.

Czech Republic’s Adam Ondra is top of the men’s rankings with 284 points but Japan’s Tomoa Narasaki, who did not participate in Munich, is close behind on 260.

Russia’s Aleksey Rubtsov, who reached two finals this year and is third overall with 214 points, was injured in a recent competition and is not expected to compete in Vail.

Representatives of the United States' team have yet to make it to finals this season, but the country has historically done well in Vail and is sending a squad of 20.

In 2018, Alex Puccio won the women's gold medal while her team-mate Kyra Condie placed fifth in the same event.

Sean Bailey earned the silver medal in the men’s competition.

Both Condie and Bailey are expected to return to Vail this year, as well as Alex Johnson who placed 10th in Munich.

Bouldering fans across the globe can tune into the season finale's action as the competition is set to be broadcast internationally.
