The US came into the final set of pool fixtures knowing a single victory would be enough to seal their spot in Nanjing next month and they duly earned it by beating the hosts at Team Sports Palace.

They won 25-23, 25-17, 25-18 to earn a spot in the final round alongside Brazil, Turkey, Italy and hosts China.

The other match in Pool 19 was also a three-set affair, Netherlands overcoming Thailand 25-18, 25-20, 25-16.

With the Americans' qualification assured, it leaves just one place available, likely to be filled by one of three nations in Pool 20, Poland, Japan or Dominican Republic.

Poland are in prime position after beating Japan 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 in Boryeong, South Korea, while Dominican Republic defeated the Koreans 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 30-28.

It leaves Poland sixth in the standings on eight wins and 24 points, with Japan on seven wins and 21 points, while Dominican Republic have seven wins and 18 points.

Elsewhere, Brazil put down a marker for the finals by moving to the top of the Nations League rankings by beating Italy in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23.

Turkey, hosts of Pool 17 at Başkent Volleyball Hall in Ankara, were subjected to a surprise four-set defeat to Belgium, 27-25, 24-26, 21-25, 23-25, who keep alive their own slim hopes of a top-six finish.

In Pool 18, held at Beilun Gymnasium in Ningbo, China, Bulgaria – who will be excluded from the 2020 Nations League with the worst record of the four challenger sides – defeated Serbia 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 for their second win of the year.

Pool hosts China eased past Germany 25-19, 25-16, 25-15.
