The Grammy-nominated tenor joins singer Luis Fonsi as a confirmed act for the curtain-raiser, which will take place at Peru's National Stadium in the capital.

Organsiers have promised that some of the Americas' "most influential" artists will be involved to bring the eyes of the world to Peru and the Games.

"Dear compatriots and dear brothers from all over the Americas, I am Juan Diego Flórez, Peruvian opera singer and I would like to tell you that I will have the honour of singing at the Opening Ceremony of the 2019 Lima Pan American Games," said Flórez.

"I am very excited and happy to be able to meet you again in this tremendous sports party that will unite all of America."

Forty-six-year-old Flórez previously earned a scholarship at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied from 1993 to 1996 and performed several operas with an orchestra.

In 2007 Flórez was awarded the Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Sun of Peru, the highest accolade awarded by the country's Government and the oldest civilian honour in the Americas.

The World Economic Forum then presented him with the Crystal Award in 2014 in recognition of his work founding Sinfonía por el Perú, an organisation which promotes choral and orchestral practice for children in the country's poorest areas.

Last year, Florez performed at a gala-concert dedicated to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow's Red Square.

His father Rubén was also a successful Peruvian singer.

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will close on August 11 with the Torch Relay for the event now underway.

They will be followed by the Parapan American Games between August 23 and September 1.
