Top seeds Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng were knocked out of the men's and women's singles events, respectively, at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Australian Open in Geelong.

Fan, the world number three, endured another early exit from a major tournament as he was beaten in six games by Germany’s Patrick Franziska at Geelong Arena.

Franziska upset the Chinese player with an 8-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 victory to set up a quarter-final clash with Sweden's Mattias Falck, who overcame South Korean Jang Woo-jin 6-11, 14-12, 4-11, 12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8.

World number one Xu Xin, who arrived in Australia having triumphed at the Korea Open, had no such problems as he cruised into the last eight by despatching Lin Yun-Ju 12-10, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6.

Xu will face Brazilian Hugo Calderano, who needed an hour to beat Portugal’s Marcos Freitas 11-9, 13-11, 11-9, 12-14, 9-11, 11-8.

Olympic champion Ma Long of China is also through after he ousted Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany 11-7, 15-13, 11-7, 11-9

Chen, winner of the women's singles title at the Korea Open, was a high-profile casualty on day two as she lost in seven games to Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa in the quarter-finals.

The Japanese player sprung a surprise with a superb 6-11, 6-11, 13-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5 win to reach the semi-finals.

Olympic gold medallist Ding Ning progressed to the last four as she swept aside South Korea's Choi Hyo-joo 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3.
