The Wimbledon men's singles final came out on top in the British sport ratings war on Sunday (July 14) – with a peak audience of 9.6 million watching Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Switzerland's Roger Federer produce a classic encounter.

World number one Djokovic triumphed 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 3-6, 13-12 to secure his fifth crown at the All England Club in extraordinary fashion.

An average of six million people were glued to the match, which lasted three minutes short of five hours, making it the longest final in Wimbledon history, the peak arriving during the fifth-set tiebreak.

Close behind the tennis in the ratings was England's hugely dramatic Cricket World Cup final win over New Zealand at Lord's.

It was watched by a peak of 7.9 million on Channel Four and Sky, that peak arriving during New Zealand's super over.

Sky, the live television rights holder for the Cricket World Cup, had agreed to the final being screened on free-to-air television after England made it to the showpiece clash.

An average of 1.6 million tuned in on Sky, with an average of 2.4 million watching the drama unfold on Channel 4.
