The reigning Paralympic champion managed a lift of 142kg at Astana Congress Center, bettering the previous global mark by 1kg.

The world record holder coming into the competition was China’s Xu Lili, who had to settle for the silver medal with 128kg.

She also finished runner-up to Omolayo at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The bronze medal in the event went to Indonesia’s Siti Mahmudah with 118kg.

China tasted victory in today’s three other events with wins for Tan Yujiao in the women’s up to 67kg, Han Miaoyu in the women’s up to 73kg and Ye Jixiong in the men's up to 88kg. 

Competing in an event that was postponed yesterday due to an unexplained fire alarm, Tan prevailed with a lift of 137kg.

She twice failed in her attempt to break her own world record of 140.5kg, falling short at 141kg on both occasions.

Her margin of victory was still 10kg over Nigeria’s Olaitan Ibrahim.

Egypt’s Fatma Omar completed the top three with 121kg. 

In the women’s up to 73kg, a tightly-fought contest was won by Han with 126kg.

Turkey’s Sibel Cam finished second with 124kg, while Egypt’s Amal Mahmoud came third with 123kg.

The men's up to 88kg saw Ye triumph on 228kg.

He tried to break his own world record of 234kg with his third attempt, but was unable to pass the test of 234.5kg.

Egypt's Hany Abdelhady was the silver medallist with 216kg, while Jordan's Abdelkareem Khattab took the bronze with 213kg.

Russian Magomed Dzhamalov's European record-breaking lift of 211kg was only good enough for a fourth-place finish.

Action is due to continue tomorrow.

Medals will be awarded in the women's up to 86kg, men's up to 97kg and men's up to 107kg events.
