Iran claimed the International Volleyball Federation Men's Under-21 World Championship title after defeating Italy in an absorbing five-set contest in Bahrain.

Having lost the first set at Isa Sports City Hall in Riffa, Iran battled back to lead 2-1.

And although Italy levelled matters at 2-2, their opponents held their nerve to triumph 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12 and win the Championship for the first time.

Iran’s previous-best display at the tournament had been a third-place finish in 2007.

Brazil wrapped up third place in comfortable fashion as they sunk Russia in straight sets, winning 25-21, 27-25, 25-12.

Argentina finished fifth having powered back from a set down to sink China 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, while South Korea sealed seventh after defeating Bahrain in four sets, 25-19, 25-23, 13-25, 25-23.

The Czech Republic wrapped up ninth place after defeating Cuba 28-26, 26-24, 25-20, with Poland taking 11th courtesy of their 15-25, 25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 15-12 win over Canada.

Egypt defeated Tunisia 25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-22 to earn 13th spot and in a closely-contested 15th-place game, Morocco saw off Puerto Rico 25-22, 25-22, 32-34, 19-25, 15-12.
