Fiol was stripped of the silver medal he won in the 200 metres butterfly at Toronto 2015 after testing positive for the banned steroid stanozolol.

This led to the Peruvian being been banned for four years, which ran from July 12, 2015 and officially ended on July 11, 2019.

He returned to racing last month in last month in Chile, before confirming his intention to represent his nation at their home Pan American Games and compete at next year's Olympics in Tokyo.

Fiol was named in Peru’s squad for their home Pan American Games, but will no longer compete.

He had been due to contest the men’s 4x100 metres and 200m freestyle relays, as well as the mixed 4x100m freestyle.

In a video on Facebook, Fiol confirming he had been informed by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) of another positive test for stanozolol.

He could face a life ban following the second positive test of his career.

"My first responsibility is to go out to publicise this information that has baffled me, since I have never consumed that substance,” Fiol said, according to Depor.

"From today I will devote all my strength to discover what has happened and prove my innocence.

“Unfortunately that will take a while and the first consequence is that I will not fulfill my dream of returning to the Pan American Games.”

Fiol has said two of his four tests in recent months have been positive.

The swimmer said his tests on April 23 and May 22 were both negative.

His tests on June 30 and July 7 came back positive.

“It is a shame because he was a swimmer who had a very good chance now in the Pan American Games,” FINA President Julio Maglione said, according to Peruvian radio station RPP.

 “He has been a very prominent swimmer in his opportunity, but if there is a repetition of substances that really brings a penalty.

“That will be determined by the FINA Anti-Doping Committee, once the documentation arrives.

“I cannot tell you what will happen, because otherwise it would be a lack of respect for my person towards the technicians who will determine the sanction of the athlete.

"If it is found that it really is, it is a serious fact.

“The sanction or what will happen, I cannot say.

“It is a technical committee with much more knowledge of all the factors and decisions taken in the control of doping I am president of FINA, but I must respect the work commissions.”

Fiol is the first confirmed case at Lima 2019, having been one of 20 athletes implicated at the last Pan American Games in Toronto.

However Chilean equestrian athlete Mauricio González was confirmed to have been left out of the country’s delegation before the Games.

The Chilean Olympic Committee announced his positive test for marijuana on July 26.

The positive was reportedly after an internal test from the Chilean Equestrian Federation.

Chile had already been forced to remove cyclists Constanza Victoria Paredas Martinez and Andreas Silva Zambrano last month from their team following positive tests.

This led to the Chilean Olympic Committee distancing themselves from the Chilean Cycling Federation, who claimed a "radical change" was required citing the stain created by "administrative disorder, concealment of relevant information and repeated transgression of anti-doping rules".
